Use the interactive map below to explore the remarkable archaeology and landscapes of the Ridgeway across the Berkshire Downs. From prehistoric burial mounds and hillforts to Saxon meeting places and Second World War airfields, each place reveals a different chapter of the Ridgeway’s long history. The Historic Ridgeway Project is helping people discover and share the rich history of the Ridgeway National Trail. Working with partners, landowners and local communities, the project brings together the stories of the people, places and landscapes that have shaped this ancient route over thousands of years.

Today the Ridgeway runs through the heart of the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, where wildlife, farming and history are closely connected. From flower-rich chalk grassland to ancient field systems and historic landmarks, this living landscape continues to be cared for and restored so that its unique character can be enjoyed for generations to come.

The Historic Ridgeway Project is funded by the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, Historic England, Friends of the Ridgeway, Mend the Gap, and the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment.
