This practical one-day Navigation Essentials course is a great introduction to the skills you need to get out and about. You might be looking at getting started in the outdoors, or just wanting to refresh and improve on some rusty map and compass skills you learnt a while ago.  You will be amazed how much information there is on an Ordnance Survey map and during the day you will learn to open your eyes to whole new world!  Our expert tuition and guidance will help you make sense of it all and give you confidence to plan and enjoy your own great outdoor adventures, whether on foot or two wheels.

We typically start the day with tea/coffee in the welcoming Hampstead Norreys Community Cafe and get introduced to our maps and compass. Mid-morning we set off on a walk to steadily develop your knowledge and skills.  You can expect to walk up to 6 miles during day taking frequent stops along the way to interpret the map, practice your skills and discuss navigation options.  You will be given plenty of guidance and tips as we go.  We then return to sum up the day and finish at about 4 pm.

We can provide an OS map and compass for the day but do bring your own if you have them – OS Explorer Map 158 (Newbury & Hungerford).  Maximum group size 6 to ensure that you get the most out of the day.  This is a friendly and relaxed day and participants’ input and questions throughout the day are encouraged and welcome.
