After following country paths to Old Burghclere, we’ll turn at the gates of Sydmonton Court for a steady continuous climb through woodland, before emerging onto the chalk ridge, and joining a section of the Wayfarer’s Walk to reach the top of Ladle Hill, 232m.  This is the site of an unfinished hill fort, which has never been excavated.  On a clear day there are fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.  We’ll have a bird’s eye view of Sydmonton Court Estate just below us, with downland further to the north, Watership Down to the immediate east, and Beacon Hill to the west.

We’ll take a short break at the top of Ladle Hill.  Bring your own refreshments and drink.

We’ll continue along the Wayfarer’s Walk in the direction of Watership Down, before turning onto a woodland lane to drop down to Sydmonton; from there we’ll follow the public footpath along a tree lined avenue through the Sydmonton Court Estate.  Our path loops around to return to the front gates, then we’ll retrace our steps back through Old Burghclere to return to Beacon Hill car park.
