Hungerford power cables are removed

After some delay the power cables are being removed from Hungerford Common.

In 2013, the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership and the trustees of the Town and  Manor of Hungerford recommended to SSE that the overhead wires on Hungerford Common be moved underground as part of their scheme for AONBs and National Parks.

Communications officer from the North Wessex Downs AONB Rose Somerset said, “Hungerford Common is a beautiful and historic place with wonderful views.  We are delighted to see the work now being done to enhance this important landscape, much loved by local residents and visitors alike.”

Trustee Robert James added “The trustees have been pressing for this work to be done for 40 years after a local resident flying his kite while it was raining was electrocuted and died when the kite became tangled with the cables. This is a great achievement by all concerned.”
