Woodland Event 3 May 2017

Make your woodland work for you

A one-day event for owners of woodland with untapped potential

Make Your Woodland Work For You

A one day event for woodland owners

Wednesday 3 May 2017 Dinton Village Hall, Salisbury

Buying a small piece of woodland is becoming increasingly popular.  Around 500 small wood lots are sold each year, often to people who have never owned woodland before.

For woodland owners, old and new, understanding the benefits of woodland management and learning the ropes is key to happy and healthy woodland, both in terms of timber production and wildlife conservation. Sadly, much of England’s woodland is under-managed with the result that an important resource is under-utilised.

Meg Chambers, Woodland Advisor to the North Wessex Downs AONB says, “There are challenges to managing small ancient or coppice woodlands, but there is so much potential out there to make more of our woodlands, for sustainable timber production and for woodland wildlife. We just need to work together to support woodland owners to make the most of their woodlands both in this lifetime and for future generations”.

In response to this challenge, a Woodland Event specifically for woodland owners who want to get more out of their woodland has been organised by the North Wessex Downs AONB and Cranborne Chase AONB, with support from the Forestry Commission.

The one-day event will include talks from experts plus a choice of workshop sessions, where attendees can explore the challenges of woodland management and discuss ways in which they can make it work for them. In the afternoon there will be a site visit to Teffont Estate woodlands to see the impact and benefits of ongoing woodland management.

This is a great opportunity for woodland owners to discover how to:

  • Keep woodland healthy and help it fight off pests and diseases
  • Improve the quality of habitats for woodland wildlife
  • Make the most of tax advantages available to woodland owners
  • Increase the value of your woodland asset
  • Generate income from the sale of timber and woodland products

By the end of the day, woodland owners will understand the potential of their woodland, who to contact and ask for advice, where to start and how to take the next steps in achieving what they want from their woodland.
